Summary-In the beginning of the chapter Scout was beating Walter Cunningham up, when Jem comes along and stops her. Jem invites Walter to lunch and he accepts the offer. The three of them walked home together. At dinner, Atticus and Walter had a good conversation, which was ended by Scout making fun of Walter for “drowning his dinner in syrup”. Scout then got in trouble for it, and had to eat the rest of her dinner in the kitchen. At school the next day, Miss Caroline got scared about the “cooties” in Burris Ewalls hair. She told him to go home and bath, but he said he was just about to leave anyway. Because he only comes to school for the first day because of the law. Miss Caroline got into a fight with Burris, and he yelled mean things at her and she cried. The students tried to comfort her, and she read a book to them. After school Scout was really upset that they weren’t doing much reading and writing. When Atticus asked her about school, she didn’t say much. When she went inside, Calpurnia was being really nice. Later, she told Atticus she didn’t want to go to school anymore, and told him all about everything at school and how she couldn’t read with him anymore. He said he would make a compromise, if she went to school he would still read with her every night.Response- Does Scout learn anything from Walter's visit? What do you think this is?I think that the Scout did learn something from Walter’s visit. I think that she learned that some people don’t have as much as others, but that is no reason to disrespect them. When Scout got in trouble she said “But Walters not company, Cal, he’s just a Cunningham-”, to which Calpurnia responded, “Hush your mouth! Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house is yo’ comp’ny, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty! Yo’ folks might be better’n the Cunninghams but it don’t count for nothin’ the way you’re disgracin’ ‘em--if you can’t act fit enough to sit at the table you can just sit here and eat in the kitchen!” I took this to mean that no matter who anyone is, you’re not so much better than them that they’re not company and you can just go around bad mouthing them like they’re nothing. Because when you do that, no matter how much more money you have, or how much more civilized you are, you are no better than them at all.
